Why the Need for a Psychotherapist.
Anger, frustration, hopelessness – these are just some of
what Dr. Jan Wagman calls the “emotional barbed wire” that
prevents people from freeing themselves of the problems that create
lives filled with despair, anxiety and fear. A psychotherapist is
trained to help people find ways out of their emotional prisons and
into the emotional freedoms they long for.
Children, especially, need the guidance and support of a psychotherapist
when divorce, child custody battles, school, peers or home problems
overwhelm their lives.
Due to her unusual background as a special education teacher and
educational therapist along with her degrees in psychology, Marriage,
Family Therapy and Human Behavior, Dr. Wagman has created a unique
therapeutic method –Therapeutic Mentoring ™.
Combining psychotherapeutic principles with educational precepts,
Dr. Wagman is able to quickly help her clients focus in on the real
issues that trouble them, help them discover a variety of potential
solutions, and educate her clients how to implement those solutions.
Dr. Wagman’s goal? To help her clients
evolve from saying: “I want to” – to – “I’m
going to” – to– “I’m doing it!”
About Dr. Jan Wagman, Ph.D., MFT
After
graduating from UCLA with a degree in Political Science, then earning
several teaching credentials, Dr. Wagman spent the next 10 years
as an Educational Therapist. Her clients, children with emotional
problems, ranged in ages from 5-19. Many were juvenile offenders
and others unable to adjust to life in public school
Spurred-on by her desire to do as much as possible to help children,
Dr. Wagman pursued her M.A. in Psychology and Ph.D.
Once in private practice, Dr. Wagman’s clientele expanded
from children to their parents, as well as individuals.
Dr. Wagman's main focus is on children and how they get embroiled
in situations where they don't have a voice, such as divorce related
issues, educational problems, social inadequacies, family dynamics;
many times Dr Wagman will end up in court as their advocate or as
an expert witness.

A Unique Approach Through Therapeutic Mentoring™
The
Common Sense Therapy™
What is a mentor? It’s a wise and loyal teacher. And a therapist
is someone who helps people clarify their goals and bring them
into being.
As a Therapeutic Mentor Dr. Wagman will
- Assist you in facing the
discomfort of breaking old patterns.
- Help you to shore-up
your strengths so you can gain the courage to withstand the
anxiety that accompanies
stepping in new directions.
- Introduce a common sense dialogue
into your life where you’ll learn to ask yourself different
kinds of questions that, as a child, you weren’t supposed
to ask.
- Guide you in learning how to use these questions to
assess your life more rationally and less emotionally. So that
rather than living by impulse, you use reason and clear thinking.
Once you learn how to bring this logical and rational perspective
to each situation that involves decision-making, you will see that
there are many more options and thus, choices, available. This
common sense therapeutic approach can help you focus-in quickly
on the root of the problem. It will then allow you to establish
a plan of action. You will learn how to use the tools that are
necessary to realize your goals – tools that that will help
you overcome emotional inertia and create positive movement.

she discussed her unique series of books.
|
To paint a picture can help us tell our story.
To drum on stage or play a synthesizer can help us find
a rhythm in life.
To dance and to sing can help us walk tall and find our
voice.
To sit on the floor and play allows us to regain our
emotional flexibility – to bend and flow with life.
And then there are times when just talking is best.
I utilize it all in my practice and my life.
And I encourage you to do it all, too.
